Undead are creatures that are animated by a force other than the force that normally animates life. These can be creatures that have died and since been re-animated, or creatures that were never previously alive, nor even existed, before becoming undead.

The variety of types of undead in human mythology, modern literature, and the modern fantasy game genre are so diverse that the rules governing undead, if they even exist in a particular Deities game, can only be supplementary material.

Basic Description

For the purposes of cosmology, the undead come in two basic flavors: intelligent and unintelligent. The intelligent are generally people who were turned undead while still living, so that they experienced no moment of true death in between. For these, the soul is still bound within the form of the undead, yet they lack the vivacity of life. In terms of relations with gods, nothing with respect to the soul itself has changed, so a mortal's silver cord may be carried into unlife, and souls maintain the ability to forge or break them. Sapient unlife has the unfortunate tendency, though not absolute law, of eroding a soul's propensity for goodness.

The unintelligent are generally those who have been truly dead for a number of minutes, hours, weeks, or years. In this case, the soul has long since departed, and a necrotic force supplants it in the animation of the matter. To a god, the animated matter is neither alive nor "inanimate," and so miracles affecting life or inanimate matter both fail (this includes the innate ability to create and destroy inanimate matter). As to the location of the soul, when a sapient, living individual dies, their soul travels through their silver cord to the afterlife created by their god (or the location in the Netherworld where the afterlife will be when the god can create it). If the individuals body is reanimated, the soul is not pulled back unless specifically targeted by the effect animating the body. This gets exponentially more difficult the longer the individual remains deceased.
